When it comes to countertop selection for a given kitchen, there are often both practical and aesthetic factors at play. This is particularly true for those who often use the countertop and related surfaces for cooking or related needs, especially one group: Bakers, who often gravitate toward quartz countertops if they have their choice of materials – but why is this?
At Creative Granite & Design, we’re happy to offer a variety of stone countertops, including beautiful quartz countertops in a wide range of specific sizes and styles. What are some of the specific qualities of quartz that often make it so attractive to bakers and those who cook regularly, and why might you consider it for your needs? Here are some basics.
Non-Porous
First and foremost, one great quality of quartz is the fact that it’s naturally non-porous. This means that it is not susceptible to various liquids, from water to oil, and many others, seeping into its surface and causing several areas of potential damage, including fading.
While other stone surfaces like marble are porous, and require sealing against these risks, quartz does not. It means that your countertops will never need to be resealed, and also that they are naturally resistant to mildew, mold and various stain risks. This also means cleaning the countertop is extremely easy and can be done with just water and a soft cloth, a big plus for those who bake or cook often in the area.
Acid-Resistant
Another major benefit for bakers: Quartz countertops are resistant to acids, which are often used during the baking process. Making lemon bars, for instance. You’ll be using some highly acidic materials, and you don’t want to risk spills that will damage your countertops. These and all other baking ingredients are totally safe to use on quartz at all times.
General Durability
And finally, when it comes to simple durability and the ability to hold up through hundreds of baking sessions without having issues, quartz is one of your very best bets. Quartz is harder than both marble and granite, and is known to last for decades or even the entire life of a home if it’s given the proper care – which, again, as we went over above, is very easy and straightforward.
In fact, quartz is even heat-resistant. While this does not mean you should place scalding pots and pans directly onto it very often, it will resist certain levels of heat, plus basic scratches or etches that might be a risk if you have children or pets.
